There are concerts in addition to the racing – which is the most exciting auto racing in the world (yes, Drive to Survive fans, even better than F1!)

Using my home state of Ohio as an example, but challenging readers to apply the principles to their own states. 1) Find military cemeteries or monuments in your home state. Example: The Mohican Memorial Shrine https://ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/mohicanmemorial-shrine ; 3) Check your state tourism website or county CVBs for girlfriend getaway suggestions. Examples: Ohio Amish Country, Yellow Springs, and Hocking Hills are among the many possibilities suggested by trivago magazine: https://magazine.trivago.com/weekend-getaways-in-ohio/ ; 4) Find nearby National and/or State Scenic Byways . I drove all of the ones that existed in Ohio in 2011. There have since been several additions that I may explore this summer. Examples: Oxford Quaker Heritage Byway is new to me. The link shows a map of Ohio with all of its scenic byways–state and national. https://www.transportation.ohio.gov/traveling/ohio-byways ; 6) Small city/town getaways within a two or three hour’s drive of home. In Ohio, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus are the big three. But there are numerous smaller cities in each quadrant of the state that are worth a day trip or even a weekend escape. Examples: Dayton, Toledo, Akron, Marietta, Zanesville. While I did not offer suggestions to substitute for New England or Canada, there are locales around the state that offer the vibes of New England, Canada, and other international destinations. Mainly due to the many immigrant and refugee communities that settled here during the 19th and 20th centuries up until the present. My favorite is Sugar Creek (Swiss). There were also a large group of New England settlers whose original farmlands were burned by the redcoats during the Revolutionary War. They were granted lands in the Connecticut Western Reserve (modern day Ohio) as restitution for the land they lost in New England. That region of northern Ohio is known as the Western Reserve Firelands. https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=182694 . My final suggestion, one not on Samantha’s list, would be to visit a state or county park, especially one that isn’t as frequently visited or is day-use only. The national parks and bigger state parks are more likely to be overrun with traffic. Ohio has one national park, 75 state parks, and hundreds of county, metro- and city parks. Examples: Findley State Park (Wellington), Inniswood Metro Park (Westerville), Eden Park (Cincinnati) .
